Summer School 2021: “Making Theory Work” Virtual Warm Up Event

On 25. September 2020 we will upload short videos from the workshop organizers that will provide insights into the respective workshops. In addition, we will upload a talk by us, the summer school organizers, introducing the summer school theme and elaborating on what we mean by ‘making theory work’.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the measures taken to contain it, the summer school ‘Making Theory Work’ in higher education research and science studies will take place from 06.-10.09.2021. Yet, our anticipation is too big to wait for a whole year. We have therefore decided to organize a VIRTUAL WARM-UP EVENT:

All videos will be uploaded to the summer school website linked below. Our talk will be followed by a live online discussion starting on 30.09., 10am CET, which will foreshadow the summer school and also instill an exchange that can be continued in person in 2021. The link to the live discussion will also appear on the website. We invite all of you cordially to our virtual event. We hope our event brings together summer school lecturers, admitted participants, and further potential participants!

How do you do theory? While the craft of methods and empirical work more generally is often made explicit in higher education research and science studies, theory work usually remains implicit. The aim of the summer school is to make explicit how we work with theories, and how we make them work. We would like to discuss the craft of theorizing and of applying theory, explore routines and strategies of doing theory, think about opportunities and blind spots of theory work, and uncover the positions and relations theories can have in our research. The summer school will give early career researchers in higher education research and science studies the opportunity of a reflexive hands-on approach to theory. It will provide a context to reflect the theory work in one’s own research and discuss it with eminent scholars of theorizing in the fields of higher education research and science studies and beyond.
